Today is a day called “Hinamatsuri” – Doll Festival and Girls’ Day in Japan.
Every year on 3 March we display a set of dolls dressed in traditional costume on a tier of steps covered in red cloth.
The dolls represent the Emperor’s court, the Emperor and Empress, ladies-in-waiting, musicians, court attendants, furniture, food boxes, lanterns, tea sets and so on.
Doll are given to bayby girls when they are born and then on 3 March every year, mothers and daughters carefully display setns of dolls.
